Love all your makeup, minus the foundation. I have similar colouring to you (minus being model-gorgeous, the cheekbones, the glossy hair, and so on). Thus, seeing these shades on you is very useful. I like the eye shadow tip -- especially important for us older women with increasingly hooded eyes.
But I have had it up to here with the "glass skin" thing. All those social media posts of women with greasy looking skin, everything overly highlighted, from primer to powder. Enough already. Hailey Bieber, I'm looking at you.
I predict glad skin is going to become the skinny eyelashes of the 90s -- instantly dating the wearer, and embarrassing her granddaughters.
Love posts like this Ruth. You don’t get ‘bite down on your wooden stick, people’ in a common-or-garden makeup blog. Many years ago, I came for the lipstick, but I stayed because you’re hilarious. Videos, try-ons, book/ chocolate recommendations, etc etc, all fine with me. X
I really enjoyed this, thanks Ruth. I’m fascinated by the glass skin effect and have wanted to try the primers too. I’m not sure if I have the skills to use this foundation though - like you I’m more used to the lighter ones that you can just smoosh on. I’m still trying to get used to Vieve’s complexion balm!
Loved it. I agree with all of the above, whatever you do and whenever you do it is why we’re here so don’t let the logistics of it all be a noose to tie yourself up in, you do you and we’ll love it all the more.
I follow loads of people on substack - mostly only the free stuff, I think I pay for 3 at the moment but I change them up semi frequently. I don’t know what day anyone’s posts are “due” and love random topics or timing, so please don’t be tied to schedules (unless you want to or it helps you to be strict).
Love the videos but love this too. Different response to it - nice to settle down and read, feels calmer and good to make time - and great to have easy access list of recommendations. Thank you!
Ruth, just be pure, unadulterated YOU - that's what we all love! There's no pretention in your posts/Instas/YouTubes etc, whether it’s testing products, Sunday tittle tattle (remember them!) or you’re dressing up as a poo - it’s the perfect mixture of content that catches us and keeps us! I don’t mind where you spurt it all out but just keep doing it! This is your little room in the Substack house so decorate it as you please!
Found this helpful, Ruth! With the little video demo insert it was just right. I probably wouldn't have looked if it was just videos. I discovered Elf make-up last year and use a lot of their stuff, as it's such good value.
I love your written posts and observations on life – your memoir was a hoot! You're a terrific writer.
If you ever feel insecure about what to post, check out Patti Smith ( the rockstar). She posts random 30 second guitar rift videos, or her reading poems or quotes from whatever she is reading that caught her eye. We are sll just happy for a glimpse inside her brain and feel the same about you. I am happy to read it all. We are all here because we followed your blog and insta and loved that style of sharing from you already.
Love this post, always happy to read your words and especially on make up. My problem with substack is that lots of people I love have moved over to it and now do mostly stuff on paid subscription. I absolutely understand you've gotta make a living but I cannot afford to follow everybody and pay £4 a month or whatever so feel I am starting to miss out on some of my faves. Xx
Thank you for saying this - the cost of following everyone I’d like to is beyond me. A shame but that’s how it is. I do understand people have to make a living.
Ruth, Caroline Barnes once did a make-up session with you and I loved the way she did your eye makeup-up.
Totally agree. It’s something I’m constantly dithering about and why I always said that my main blog post, every Tuesday, would be free. Will be interesting to see how the substack model pans out over time!
Love any kind of post!

I missed these kind of posts!
Well I loved this. You just carry on. I found it informative and useful.

Love this post… just what we need. Thank you ❤️
Have you tried the tarte brown tubing mascara? I am liking it and this post:)
Love this style on Substack. It's really giving me Bloglovin vibes which i really miss!

Thanks Joanna, lovely way of putting it! God I can’t believe I dressed as a poo! That was a career highlight.

Thank you, noted. It’s easy to lose sight of that so this is really helpful.
I love quick, almost shambolic posts. Although this is far too polished to count!
Haha! I did think it was a little long to be “casual” by the time I got near the end…

I do wonder whether substack will become more like Spotify where you pay one subscription and get access to all content…
Totally agree. I feel the same and can't afford to follow all. Also understand why people are moving to substack.

I so hear you on this.
