Brilliant thank you! Now avidly waiting for the wired evil but essential bra vs soft comfy loveliness bra for D+ post 🙂

Those high black boots are fire, though.

I stumbled across this top when it was mentioned In another Substack post earlier this week. it sounded perfect for me and I immediately searched Uniqlo Australia and it’s sold out. I won’t give up. Love your writing Ruth 👏👏

I wear these so often, and have them in multiple colours. Great under an open shirt in summer, toasty and comfortable under a jumper or cardigan as it cools down. In really hot weather, these on their own. They come in smooth versions as well as the ribbed and slightly cropped for summer (which I can’t cope with as I just end up trying to pull them down to cover the inch of bare flesh all the time). Best things being they fit, they support your boobs in a lovely pair of grapefruits shape, and they are an absolute bargain.

Do they sometimes do this vest in more colours then? Or is it a different style?

Expand full comment

Yes, more colours and slightly different fits and textures but all with built in bra feature. Worth checking their website for full range especially in spring/summer.

And they wash well, don’t lose their shape, in a delicates bag and wash cycle.

I love these tops! I even wear them for Pilates, no need for a sports bra. The absolute best find!

I can’t believe I shunned for so long!

Many a fashion influencer has raved about these tops - the summer version apparently comes in a range of colours, even stripes. 🦓 Sadly we don’t have Uniqlo in Norway, and I survive the consequent non-built-in bratops life by wearing bras from Understated. Really sexy AND comfortable without a wire or itchy tag to be seen! Their bras are made of polyester, which I try my best to avoid, but I wash them in guppy bags to prevent micro plastics. 🌱 I shopped their recent sale and bought four different colours and shapes to see which I liked the most. Now I’m just waiting for their next sale… 🤩😃

Useful to know (if this sort of thing had existed when I was in my teens and early twenties and everyone was wearing vest tops I'd have been all over it). I wear an E/F cup so I'm interested that you're finding these tops supportive. I think I'd like them for loafing-about days (I'm one of those rare creatures that is more comfortable, by and large, in a Proper Bra, but I can't nap in them!).

I’d say loafing-to-casual if you need a lot more support. Any occasion if you’re usually ok with light support!

I am too obsessed with these tops. They really are a godsend as I hate wearing bras but do need some support.

Yes, gone are my braless days! If ever indeed there were any.

Loving your book Ruth, it's definitely a witty page turner. The BFF is hovering, ready to snatch it out of my hands when I've finished. Nice vest top, handy having an inbuilt bra especially for the summer.

Oh thank you Kathryn!

Its no bra top BUT I was very brave (as someone with big arms) and bought a really solid and thick denim blue vest top in the M&S sale for £2.49, and I love it! (I did wear it with an open pink shirt over it but still!)

Expand full comment

May I ask what sort of bra shenanigans you wore beneath? I LOVE a vest top but this is always my stumbling block! Hence this post I suppose… 😀

Well, I actually went into M&S with the purpose of buying a new nude bra and big nude pants (multipack obvs) but the sale was so good I got two different nude bras instead for £5 each! So a nudey soft jersey padded underwired bra with plain straps, and I'm just gonna have to get used to the straps poking out, or wearing it with the shirt over it. Also the bras will break in about 6 weeks when i lean over and a wire spontaneously snaps so who knows what the future holds for vest bra combos! I did look at the loewe vests the other day and balked at the price, maybe i'll put my own patter on the front of mine (i will not)
